Where are you Christmas?

Luke 2:1-20 Luke 2 The Message (MSG) Luke 2 The Birth of Jesus
"1-5About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David's town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant. 6-7While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel. An Event for Everyone 8-12There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God's angel stood among them and God's glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, "Don't be afraid. I'm here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David's town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you're to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger." 13-14At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God's praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him. 15-18As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it over. "Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us." They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed. 19-20Mary kept all these things to herself, holding them dear, deep within herself. The sheepherders returned and let loose, glorifying and praising God for everything they had heard and seen. It turned out exactly the way they'd been told! "

It's Christmas time or as many prefer to call it: The Festive Season. Everywhere we go, we are greeted by Christmas decorations and beautiful carols. Yet, for many of us, Christmas is not a time of joy. It is a time where we are reminded of our losses; hardships and sadness. A song that summed it up perfectly is: "Where are you Christmas" by Faith Hill.

Where are you Christmas Why can't I find you Why have you gone away Where is the laughter You used to bring me Why can't I hear music play My world is changing I'm rearranging Does that mean Christmas changes too Where are you Christmas Do you remember The one you used to know I'm not the same one See what the time's done Is that why you have let me go

As Christians we know that there is a deeper meaning to Christmas. So we add a nativity scene to our decorations and we go to church on Christmas day to celebrate the birth of "a child" "We celebrate Jesus as a child lying in a manger, but we tend to forget the deeper meaning of Christmas. It is such a touching story portrayed by actors, musicians and churches worldwide. Yet, we celebrate Christmas from a distance. How can we relate to a baby boy lying in a manger? A baby knows no sadness, no fears, no loss or rejection. Isaiah sketches a different picture of Jesus in Isaiah 53 years before the birth of Jesus Christ when he says:

"1 Who believes what we've heard and seen? Who would have thought God's saving power would look like this? 2-6The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling, a scrubby plant in a parched field. There was nothing attractive about him, nothing to cause us to take a second look. He was looked down on and passed over, a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand. One look at him and people turned away. We looked down on him, thought he was scum. But the fact is, it was our pains he carried— our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us. We thought he brought it on himself, that God was punishing him for his own failures. But it was our sins that did that to him, that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins! He took the punishment, and that made us whole. Through his bruises we get healed. We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost. We've all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everything we've done wrong, on him, on him. 7-9He was beaten, he was tortured, but he didn't say a word. Like a lamb taken to be slaughtered and like a sheep being sheared, he took it all in silence. Justice miscarried, and he was led off— and did anyone really know what was happening? He died without a thought for his own welfare, beaten bloody for the sins of my people. They buried him with the wicked, threw him in a grave with a rich man, Even though he'd never hurt a soul or said one word that wasn't true. 10Still, it's what God had in mind all along, to crush him with pain. The plan was that he give himself as an offering for sin so that he'd see life come from it—life, life, and more life. And God's plan will deeply prosper through him. 11-12Out of that terrible travail of soul, he'll see that it's worth it and be glad he did it. Through what he experienced, my righteous one, my servant, will make many "righteous ones," as he himself carries the burden of their sins. Therefore I'll reward him extravagantly— the best of everything, the highest honors— Because he looked death in the face and didn't flinch, because he embraced the company of the lowest. He took on his own shoulders the sin of the many, he took up the cause of all the black sheep."

Maybe Christmas will become "The Festive Season" when we realize that Jesus was not only born and suddenly died a terrible death at the age of 33. No, He was born and had to grow up and go through all the hardships that we go through every day. Otherwise, God could have miraculously sent Jesus from Heaven at the age of 33 (no birth; no childhood with scraped knees; no teenage years with teenage moods; no early adult confusion and rejection). No! God sent Jesus to be an "ordinary man" with an ordinary appearance so that we can be able to relate to Him and feel free to come to Him without any rejection as He knows from first hand experience what we are going through. Lord can You see me standing here? Can You feel my tears soaking through Your fingers? Blood gushing from an open wound... The wound I try so hard to hide away from this world. Lord can You see? I grow so weary of running... I am so tired of hiding... Lord did You feel the way I do now? Hurt and confused because of people abandoning You? Lord can You see me standing here in a my pool of bitterness and sin...? Soaked in Your tears, drenched in my shame... I hear You calling out my name. I am the only one to blame for this brokenness in me... Believe in me like I believe in You... I believe in You... ~by Madelein Bylsma~ He believes in You

A Child is born! YOUR Saviour is born!

Thanksgiving Prayer

This morning I read a prayer which touched my heart deeply. this prayer could just as well have been written by myself, thanking my Daddy for EVERYTHING on Thanksgiving. This poem was originally written by Ripplemaker and can be found at the link below.

"God, thank you for this wonderful year! All five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes of it! Thank you for the little and big milestones that have happened in my life. Growing up can sometimes be a painful thing especially when it involves handling our emotional and mental state. But what a year of learning and growing! I wouldn’t change it for anything.

I smile with delight. Your little girl is all grown up now. And I know that you are happy for me. Why are the tears falling down my face, blurring my eyes? Perhaps it’s because I just know that there is so much love and gratitude within and all around me. I thank you for this precious, very precious gift.

A life lived in love is so much different. I know because I too have walked the valleys of darkness. And yet, I have made it through. I am here, alive and free! And everyday has become a celebration.

God, thank you for all the small miracles that comprised the bigger miracle in my life. The miracle of finding, knowing and loving myself. I was lost but now I am found. Your love was unfailing, unchanging. It was steadfast…a solid bright light that got me through the dark times. How I have basked in that pure light of love; received comfort when my heart was pierced with pain. I see that the miracle of love is the greatest gift of all. Love truly heals.

God, thank you for giving me all the opportunities to create ripples of love. As I have experienced your love and grow to love myself, I noticed that I am reaching out more to others. I rejoice every time I am able to respond better to situations.

As I have used my healing gift, I have been able to witness the transformation of lives (including physical healing) and I too have been blessed tremendously. "

Daddy, above all, thank You for loving me!

It's all about You, Jesus

1 Chronicles 17

David Submits and Prays
1 After the king had made himself at home, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Look at this: Here I am comfortable in a luxurious palace of cedar and the Chest of the Covenant of God sits under a tent."
2 Nathan told David, "Whatever is on your heart, go and do it; God is with you."
3-6 But that night, the word of God came to Nathan, saying, "Go and tell my servant David, This is God's word on the matter: You will not build me a 'house' to live in. Why, I haven't lived in a 'house' from the time I brought up the children of Israel from Egypt till now; I've gone from one tent and makeshift shelter to another. In all my travels with all Israel, did I ever say to any of the leaders I commanded to shepherd Israel, 'Why haven't you built me a house of cedar?'
7-10 "So here is what you are to tell my servant David: The God-of-theAngel-Armies has this word for you: I took you from the pasture, tagging after sheep, and made you prince over my people Israel. I was with you everywhere you went and mowed your enemies down before you; and now I'm about to make you famous, ranked with the great names on earth. I'm going to set aside a place for my people Israel and plant them there so they'll have their own home and not be knocked around anymore; nor will evil nations afflict them as they always have, even during the days I set judges over my people Israel. And finally, I'm going to conquer all your enemies.
10-14 "And now I'm telling you this: God himself will build you a house! When your life is complete and you're buried with your ancestors, then I'll raise up your child to succeed you, a child from your own body, and I'll firmly establish his rule. He will build a house to honor me, and I will guarantee his kingdom's rule forever. I'll be a father to him, and he'll be a son to me. I will never remove my gracious love from him as I did from the one who preceded you. I will set him over my house and my kingdom forever; his throne will always be there, rock solid."

In London, England there was a beautiful church with a musical worship that rocked people out of their seats. Even though the church was full, the musicians did a brilliant job and everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves, something was missing. The pastor realized that the musical aspect of the praise and the performance became more important that the worship itself. Pastor Mike Pilavachi and the church leadership then fired the band and took the congregation back to the basics. The following song was written by Matt Redman as a result:

When the music fades
All is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that's of worth
That will bless Your heart

Bridge:
I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

Chorus:
I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus

Verse 2:
King of endless worth
No one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
All I have is Yours
Every single breath

Bridge:
I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

Chorus:
I'm coming back to the heart of worship,
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus

The Soul Survivor Church realized that we are called to offer our sacrifice of praise and that the intentions of the praise are more important than the praise in itself.

In 1 Chronicles 17, David realizes that he stays in a beautiful palace whilst the ark of the covenant of God must be sheltered in a tent. David wants to build a temple to shelter the covenant but God is a God who values the simpler things in life. God uses David’s own life to explain to him the value of simplicity when he says : I took you from the pasture, tagging after sheep, and made you prince over my people Israel. I was with you everywhere you went and mowed your enemies down before you; and now I'm about to make you famous, ranked with the great names on earth… The Hebrew text literally states: “You want to build me a house?” God understood David’s intentions and he knew that David wanted to do something to thank God
God takes note of David’s desire to serve Him and makes promises to him and his descendents which He keeps (2 Chronicles 6)

To God the intention is more important than the action itself. This can also be seen in Genesis 22 when God ordered Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac. To God the intention and Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac was more important than the offering itself. God rewarded Abraham for his obedience and provided a lamb for offering instead.

What is your intentions regarding your actions today? You might be giving food to the hungry……why? Providing shelter to the destitute…why? Being a shoulder to cry on for someone in need…why? Give your pennies to the beggar next to the road…why? You see, all the abovementioned actions are noble and good in God’s eyes but what is more important is the heart with which you do it.
Isaiah wrote:

The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.

May all your actions today be led by one question only: What shall I do for God, to serve and honour him?" May we follow Paul’s advice when he wrote to the Romans:

Romans 12
Place Your Life Before God
1-2 So here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.
Praise God in whatever you do with A PURE HEART and remember the words of the song written by Redmann:

You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

I'm coming back to the heart of worship
And it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it
When it's all about You,
It's all about You, Jesus

Appearances

The one you just called fat? He has been starving himself and has lost over 15 kilograms. The one you just called stupid? He has a learning disability and studies over 4 hours a night. The one you just called ugly? She spends hours putting make-up on hoping people will like her. The one you just tripped? He is abused enough at home. The guy on the street sniffing glue? Glue happens to be cheaper than food and takes away the hunger pains. The 16 year old girl you insulted for being pregnant? She was raped by her father…

We have all heard the expression: “First impressions last”. For many of us these first impressions are defined by appearances, success, education and wealth. By judging a book by its cover, you might be judging a messenger sent by God or even God Himself. There is no better example of this than God’s Son, Jesus. In Isaiah 53:2 where Isaiah prepared the nation for the coming of Jesus Christ, he wrote the following:

“….he had no form or majesty that we should look at him. And no beauty that we should desire him.”

From the above verse we can assume that Jesus was no oil painting. He was also not very wealthy (he was the son of a carpenter), he was not a Pharisee or a priest. Just an ordinary man. Yet, the significance of his life cannot be overemphasized.

More examples on the significance that Our Heavenly Father attaches to physical appearance can be found in John:7:24, "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment"; and 1 Samuel:16:7, "But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'"

Focus on the heart of the person you meet and get to know their real worth. This is what you will be judged on one day and you might just invite angels or God Himself into your home or your life.

Today, take some time to look at the way you treat and judge the people in your life. They might be God-sent and tomorrow, they might be gone before you had the time to realize their true worth.
